Jefferson Sheard was invited to produce designs for an exciting centre of excellence in low carbon innovation.
Now complete, the project aims to facilitate research, development and skills for environmental technologies, enabling businesses to exploit emerging markets in this sector – the first of its kind in the Yorkshire and Humber region.
The centre is a ‘flagship’ within the low carbon sector achieving a BREEAM rating of Excellent and utilising existing and emerging green technologies and construction techniques.
Jefferson Sheard has taken into consideration the building’s function as an interactive learning tool for students by exposing features including the under-floor heating system and rainwater harvesting system, as well as designing a demonstrator-plant room which operates as a classroom for students.
The design incorporates the following elements which have been revealed throughout the building: roof mounted photovoltaic cells; roof mounted solar thermal hot water panels; wind catchers providing natural ventilation; air to air heat recovery systems; air source heat pump systems; evaporative cooling systems; on site wind turbines; rain water recycling system; sustainable drainage systems including soakaways and swales; green roof; biomass heating system; high performance timber and aluminium composite glazing and curtain walling systems; low embodied energy materials such as Straw bale walling systems; unfired clay bricks; recycled aluminium roofing; and timber rainscreen cladding.
The TLC has been recognised with an array of prestigious environmental awards such as the SCALA Civic Building of the Year Award 2011, Green Gown Awards 2011, Care 4 Air Outstanding Contribution to Improving Air Quality, Green Apple Awards, Sheffield Telegraph Environmental Awards, Building and Design, Green Gown Awards 2010, Yorkshire Post Environmental Awards and the Built Environment Projects Over £1m.
