“We like to discover the potential hidden in materials. With this collection we have literally thought out-of-the-box.”
Angelo Bucci – Founder and Chief Designer of deZign Studio
cartOOn is a collection of furniture items completely made of 7mm thick fiberboard sections, just interlocked without need of glue. This means that all the elements are 100% recyclable, since there are no chemical treatments or other materials keeping the pieces together but paper. The use of single independent sections is possible thanks to the incredible shear strength of double-wave cardboard, which allows to reduce the size of the packaging obtaining furniture easy to assemble, light to carry and customizable.
The collection is part of a wider project developed by our firm about a zero-km design distribution system based on the idea of glocalization. Merging local creativity with manufacturing know-how we can get products that are the cultural expression of a certain specific place. This approach is a great economic stimulus for small and medium companies that are facing the crisis, therefore socially sustainable, and it also gives designers the chance to discover and work with manufacturer open to experimentation and new collaborations. It’s all about using limited resources in a creative way in a context of radical change and instability.
Cardboard furniture is also a provocation to raise consumer awareness about the life-cycle of the objects and the way we use them in the short and long term. In terms of aesthetic, we also wanted to show that a materials usually conceived for boxes can be shaped in more organic and cosy forms, like poltrOOn. Its smaller version, poltrOOnita, thought for kids, is also a toy and an educational tool that inspires unconventional uses of a material.
The collection is composed by chair, table, armchair, bookshelf and pouf.
