Displaying photos stylishly is as much as an art as creating a photographic composition. Whether you are a collector or a photographer yourself you would certainly not like to see these beautiful works of art languishing in old trunks or a forgotten cabinet. Neatly displaying your collections in your home may sometimes prove to be a daunting task. In your enthusiasm, you may at times clutter a space with too many framed images. There are certain memories that are highly cherishable for you, but may not be so for others. Photos of private moments are best kept away for private viewing.

You need to be inventive with your display techniques as well. Highly evocative photographs like that of Robert Demachy, Leonard Misonne and Eva Watson-Schütze are best displayed in singles at a focal point of any room. Grouping them with other more mundane images may not be too graceful. Similarly, do not mix different genres, for example pictorial with architectural photographs or portraits with still life. With these basic rules in mind we will begin discussing about the various ways of showcasing your collections.

Turn your photographs into wallpaper

You can create a more expansive looking interior this way. Choose a photo captured by you, one of your family members or friends. Make sure it is crisp and without any unwanted blur and noise. Enhance it using any photo editing software.

Your next step is to get it printed on high quality paper. You can attach a transparent vinyl sheet above to make it more durable and easier to maintain. Use wallpaper adhesive to paste it on your chosen wall. If the photograph is not good enough for a large format printing, you may opt for a similar wallpaper with tiled images.

Images to adorn the feature wall

This is one of the most standard yet effective ways of displaying photos. Depending on the availability of space, choose a large format photograph or go for a set of smaller ones. For a classically decorated room, choose ornate wood or gild frames.

If you are opting for a minimal style, simple aluminium or glass frames would be more appropriate. Laminating the photos could be another affordable option, though this eliminates the chances of changing the images periodically.

Photos above the headboard

Putting a large framed photograph on or above the headboard is a sure way of spectacularly lighting up the interior of your bedroomDiego Revollo Arquitetura S/S Ltda uses this technique to beautify the Villa Leopoldina loft bedroom.

You can choose a similarly minimal frame or a more decorative one. The latter will be more appropriate for a larger space. Make sure that the colour of the photo frame complements the photograph and the wall behind. Here too instead of one prominent image you can choose a cluster of three, four or six photos, but bear in mind that they should be similar thematically and tonally.

Upholster your furniture with your favourite photo

This is one of the coolest ways of displaying photos. You can deck out your reclining chairs, cushions, stools and nightstands this way. You can even create a quilt cover with printed photos. If your printer is capable of printing on fabric you can do this at home. However, do not damage your inkjet printer by forcibly trying to do so if it is not manufactured to perform the job.

You will have to buy fabric sheets to print digital images on them. Dry iron the sheets before printing. Use ink appropriate for the job. If right materials are chosen, they are printed to last. Needless to say, the interior will look at its creative best this way.

Display photographs inside your cabinets

Tuck small framed photographs inside your cabinets and bookcases. Place them on the shelves. Instead of traditional wood or metal, try to give it a different sort of framing. One very common way is to use plaster of Paris to mount your images. If you have a good hand with craft you can decorate the sides with geometric forms, flowers and foliage.

You could also mount your pictures on cardboard. This is cheap, easy to do at home and can be customised to different shapes and sizes. Images mounted this way are lightweight and easy to hang on faux partitions and wall panels.

Create a photo gallery under stair

This is another ingenious way of displaying your photographs. You can use the under stair space, side wall, landing and even the underside of the stairway to create a stylish photo gallery. If you are an avid photographer or an enthusiastic traveller with clicking habits you will surely relish showcasing your explorations this way.
