Plan your small garden space

Maintaining a kitchen garden at home is not a one person's job. This is in fact a a fun loving and rewarding activity which each family member can experience. First, finalize the space and the area which will be required to grow vegetables. Keeping in mind the length and width of the building, space or a land is measured and then marked as a park of edible greens. At last, it depends on you how much space you want to utilize, a large area or a small belt. Whatever veggies you want to grow and the number of veggies you want to grow, should be as per your house’s blueprint. If you have two balconies or two different open spaces at home, then you can even plan to make two different kitchen gardens. Remember,  size is never the fundamental factor when planning for a garden space. If your space of garden is smaller than you care to divulge, don't let that keep you from making the utmost of it.

Prepare your soil

The second important thing is to prepare a perfect soil with the help of fertilizers and various manures which will make the soil rich in nutrients and will increase the fertility. To make vegetables, healthy and green, the organic substances should be done properly. Also, the soil should be soft and well aerated as it will help the roots to grow and spread properly. A high-yielding variety of seeds can play an important role to maintain the lushness of humus.  Now plan which soil type you are going to use for the veggies will it be the same for all vegetables or different for different vegetables. Use different soil for different plants according to the plants that are required. You can use different containers for different plants. Other than that, you can also grow plants in a single plot which requires the same type of soil for growth.

Decide which vegetables you want to grow

Now decide which type of vegetables you are planning to grow. You can’t aim for big plants or plants which require more space, so select the vegetables as per the available space. Also, while planning about the vegetables,  it is important to consider the climate where you stay, which type of weather is suitable for plants and which type of soil is easily available in the market. Plants which are small, tiny and whose roots are not larger will be best suitable for your kitchen garden. Considering the available space, select the variety of plants which will easily breed in a small space. You can even think about growing vines like cucumbers, pole beans, tomatoes, eggplant and squash. These plants will grow in a lesser space and will crawl, just keep in mind they will require a support so place a stick for them to grow.  Be smart with your vertical space.

Be smart with your vertical space

Even after deciding about the vegetables to grow at home, you might still be confused what to do. I know each person has different views, different choices, and different tastes. Vertical space doesn't require to be done overly. Vertical space is nothing more than using vertical gardening to grow vegetables. All those diet conscious people might want to go with the vegetables which are rich in minerals and vitamins, whereas on the other side some may prefer to have more of green vegetables which are rich in roughage. But, if you plan things well and make a proper selection about which vegetables to grow, you may save your time and it will be very easy for you to grow healthy vegetables at the comfort of your home. Remember, vertical gardening takes it one more step by giving non-climbing plants a space on the wall. All you must know is, that the support system should be strong enough to grip the weight of the whole thing

Interplant 2 or more veggies

By now, you must be excited about growing veggies at your small space at home, but via age old technique called interplanting, you can grow more veggies even though experiencing space crunch. You can grow all those veggies which your local grocer might not be selling. Interplanting or Intercropping means to grow two or more types of vegetables together in the same space. For example, you can grow a plant of peppers next to onion. Interplanting will save the space and will allow you to grow more vegetables. This method helps plants to grow faster and also protects the plants from insects. Both the plants should be able to get enough oxygen, water, heat and sunlight to grow properly. This method will allow you to grow more vegetables and hence, with interplanting, you can enjoy lots of green food.

Use pots to grow veggies

You can choose your way of growing vegetables in your kitchen in pots or in a plain surface garden. Growing veggies in multiple pots will be more convenient to look after, as compared to managing the whole garden. Planting vegetables in pots may take less time and will save money as well, as it will require less space. After all, it depends on you what method you like and the available space with you. If you already have a small garden at home, you can plant the remaining veggies in the pots. Select the pots as per the needs of plants to grow. You can also hang the pots above the garden area if you don’t have physical space to keep them in the small garden. Hanging decorative pots will make your garden look more beautiful. Anyhow, whatever technique you use to grow the plants in your small garden, you will get plenty of fresh veggies and will definitely make others jealous about your garden.
