Sometimes part of owning a home is thinking and even over-thinking how to use leftover rooms and odd space. So, you've got your bedroom situated – the office too – maybe even the garden room is on the menu – but what do you do to fully utilise that leftover attic space? Is it so structurally bare that nothing seems possible? Or are you empty of any ideas?  Have no fear!

An attic is the newest addition to the home family with the ideas we have provided below! Acquiring more space is always a plus no matter what you use it for.  Think about a study, a hobby room, even an entertainment and party room – and depending on the condition of your attic some of these ideas might be rather easy to install! We suggest that you turn your attic into the room you always dreamed of and never had – the room where experimentation in style and function are in the forefront of your priorities!

Extra Room

One of the most basic ways to utilise attic space is to simply add an extra room.  This will be the easiest to design and construct and will still increase the value of your home by an incredible amount. Think about creating a room to relax and meditate, a yoga room, or even a room to unwind from your daily, autonomous activities. You would be surprised how nice it is to have a room centred only on things that make you happy – clean, personal and unique.

Since attic spaces tend to be small and dark – consider doing what this homeowner did and add skylights while using a lighter colour palette.  The illusion of space is the most important aspect in rooms like these!

Fitness Room

Probably one of the most beneficial uses of attic space is to create a fitness room/gym.  Most of us have weightlifting and exercise equipment laying around various areas of our home – why not give them a proper place?!

When installing a fitness room into your attic, keep it clean and well-ventilated.  Consider hardwood flooring, or for something more affordable, stick with laminate to get the same look for less.  Keep the wall colours light and fresh and either install durable storage spaces or create your own! Both skylights and mirrors will add a special touch to your fitness studio and the mirror will be great at both diffusing and reflecting natural/artificial light to create the illusion of open space.

Make sure then designing your fitness studio that you've tested the structural durability of your attic space – as exercise equipment (weights) and cardio machines will add a lot of weight!

Storage Room

There is definitely not one, single homeowner that would claim they have enough storage room!  Use your attic as an opportunity to build that walk-in closet that you always dreamed of! Or use it as a general storage room for craft/hobby supplies, extra clothing, or holiday decorations!

Once the flooring and walls are prepped and primed, all you need to focus on is creating the right kind of storage system that will properly fit all your items! Do floor-to-ceiling storage compartments (like seen here) and add some variety to the size and shape of each compartment.  Once you take down the correct dimensions and measurements, installing a DIY storage system can be started and finished in no time! This can even be a weekend project if you have the right helping hands!

Workshop/Hobby Room

Most of us have a hobby or wish at times that we had extra space for special projects.  Your attic is the perfect space for such ideas.  Add skylights or a window like seen here to bring a refreshing and inspirational atmosphere to your work space and don't forget light colours.

Shelving systems and storage compartments are also beneficial as you'll probably have tools and utensils!  Make sure if you want to create a workspace that you make it a space you will feel comfortable being in for hours on end.  Properly insulate your attic for the colder, winter months – choose comfortable seating arrangements and furniture, as well as soft, plush rugs in case you tend to stand while working.

Spa Room

We want to be honest with you – creating a spa room in your attic will be one of the most difficult items on this list.  Before you start brainstorming and designing, you will have to make sure that the proper plumbing and insulation are available.  If not, it will be a costly endeavor  - but one that's well worth it.  Once the structural logistics are worked out – you're ready to go.

Use natural materials, like timbers and bamboo to create the look and feel of a public spa.  These materials are also durable and handle changes in temperature quite well. Skylights are an added feature that will bring the exterior and interior of your home together – making you feel closer to nature and create a more relaxing state.

For extras, think about heated floors, towel heaters and plush rugs to make the space as cozy as possible.

Party/Entertainment Room

We have all seen the enormous mansions on the television with built in movie cinemas and gaming rooms! What we don't realize is that this is also possible on a much small, more affordable scale!  Party and entertainment rooms have certain requirements in order to be fully-functional and stand out.

First, be sure to recognize that for an optimal experience you will need to spend most of your money on the electronics and appliances.  Think about projector-style screens, surround sound (especially surround-sound built into movie theatre-style chairs!) and light fixtures that dim depending on the occasion.

The great part about media and entertainment rooms is often, because of their function, you can go a bit more minimal when it comes to interior design and decorating.  Let the comfortable chairs and projector screen think for themselves.  In this example, the homeowners left one of the brick walls exposed and it creates a great look with the rest of the space!
