Elegant, opulent, and romantic, the Neoclassical interior design style introduces any room to European formality. This style draws inspiration from nature and geometry and first emerged in 18th century Britain and France. Neoclassical decor draws on classic Greek and Roman art and architecture by featuring columns, classical reliefs, and lavish furnishings. This design style adds sophistication to any space imaginable.

Today on homify, we're going to take a tour of an interesting studio apartment that implements exactly this style. It exudes an unmatched expansive feel, and whose tone exudes the charm of spring time throughout the year. Created and designed by the professionals at Design Studio Volkov and located in the alluring country of Russia, this Victorian beauty incorporates an alluring blend of purples and cream colours to create a luxurious and ornate home.

If you want to know how to style your home in a Neoclassical fashion, continue reading to see how Design Studio Volkov transformed an average apartment into upscale living.

A Lavish Dining Room

Early Victorian homes featured lighter colored walls with richer colors in the dining room and kitchen, which we can see perfectly implemented here with the use of light, cream coloured walls paired with light purple and lavender textiles and soft white furniture. The light colours in this apartment contribute to the expansive feel of the room, making space feel much larger and more open. Design Studio Volkov uses these Victorian inspired soft, subdued colours, but also adds a hint of eclecticism in their design. Notice the chandelier above the dining table – it's elegant, to say the least, and matches wonderfully with the eclectic accessory undertones, such as the framed flower images on the wall above the table.

Later Victorian style turned to deeper tones and used to draw attention to the importance of a room, which we can see here when we move past the dining room to the family room. The darker purple curtains and sofa draw your attention from the soft, relaxed dining room and shows a distinct separation of the two rooms.

Open Floor Plan

Moving effortlessly into the family room thanks to the very practical open floor plan, we don't see detailed patterns on the furniture like you would in some Victorian inspired interior design. Instead, we see solid colours of white and lavender used on the decor, providing the family room with just the right amount of simplicity and grandeur.

We can also see an interesting floor design from this perspective. We can see the tiled kitchen floor meet the hardwood floor of the family room in a smooth, almost uninterrupted fashion. The addition of the border adds a neoclassical element and aiding in the visual separation of the two rooms.

Wonderful Windows

The use of full-wall windows wasn't an available luxury in the Victorian era, but their use here adds perfect charm to this particular apartment, giving it that distinct neoclassical flair. The large scale window allows plenty of natural light to shine in, reflecting off of the light, cream coloured walls and white accent furniture pieces. This makes the space feel much more open and a great deal larger, which adds a certain je ne sais quoi to the overall atmosphere. Instead of opting for the very traditional Victorian family room the use of large windows gives this home a spring time feel that lasts all year round.

The Stylish Den

Neoclassical furniture embraces clean, straight lines and geometric shapes, while still having some of the detailed carvings so prominent in the preceding Baroque period. The refined pieces of furniture in this den feature design elements of that era, while also incorporating a softer, subtler neoclassic design. Fabrics and upholstery in a neoclassical design are in rich, but muted hues such as the moss greens, blues, dusty pinks, and classic whites that we see here. This softness adds the style of the previous era with the revival of the new era, creating a magnificently fused, relaxing space.

A Classy Bedroom

Many things make a bedroom look comfortable and extravagant. In this room, what makes it look this way is definitely the bed. With gorgeous subtle grey and white matched with the striking blue, this bed screams both class and comfort.

The interior design of the room is not overpowering with its pomposity and unnecessary grandeur that were popular in the times before neoclassicism. On the contrary, it's distinguished by the very lack of strict forms and unnecessary luxury. Although this room doesn't boast opulence, it certainly does emanate it. The bold accessories against neutral tones really creates a relaxed and mature atmosphere. The massive mirror taking up the left wall space is an additional feature of the neoclassical design.

Finally, The Bathroom

Inspired by the opulent elegance of the bathrooms in traditional Victorian estates, Victorian bathrooms have great appeal for homeowners who prefer a lush, romantic, and pampered feel for their bath space. This bathroom, however, incorporates much more of the neoclassic style, most noticeably through the stand-up shower instead of a tub. Avoiding oppressive dark shades, this bathroom utilizes light blues and pinks with flower decoration to incorporate that spring time feel we have in other areas of the home.

Classics never go out of fashion, and the neoclassical interior always looks elegant, stylish, and restrained. Where the classic Victorian interior looks sometimes looks dull and strict, the neoclassical style has the advantage of mixing the old with the new, and this revival never fails to satisfy.
