Ever dreamt of a home away from home? One that you can escape to when the going gets tough or you just need a quiet retreat?

Today we're taking you on a tour of the construction of one heck of a retreat built just a few metres from the residents' property. The best way to describe this structure is as a garden studio man cave–a place where you can have a relaxing drink and rest away the day's stress. The architects at Samuel Kendall Associates are the ones responsible for this construction, and we're going to go with them step by step and see how it was done.

Before: the idea

The idea of this construction came from residents who wanted a bit more from their home life. On the hunt for a space that would harmoniously combine comfort, design, work, and play, they thought an addition to the home would be ideal. But this addition wasn't intended to be attached directly to the home, but rather further down on the property. Luckily, these architects had an expansive back yard to work with.

The structure

As we look at the shell of the structure, we can see that the interior will be rather compact, but the ideal size for small gatherings. The building itself was designed with a flat roof which opens with a large window to the front garden and will include a lounge area, as well as a small bathroom, that will lead out onto a new spacious terrace that connects the building to the garden.

On the plus side

This addition has many advantages for these residents, and the same apply to you, should you opt for such an add-on. It's perfect for those who want more space but don't have the option to expand within the home. Not only that, but this type of construction doesn't get in the way with your day-to-day life.

After: a beautiful end result

Voila! Here is the end result and it looks incredible! Timber cladding on the building gives this minimalist design a warm and natural tough, and the extension of the wood to the deck brings uniformity to the area. Folding glass doors separate interior from exterior during cold nights, but on hot summer days you can bet they remain open for all the heavy traffic that will be piling through.

Just a little farther

Let's take one last look farther inside before we part and check out the lounge area. The television is right across from the expansive sofa, and a super comfortable recliner isn't far off. As a functional room divider, the fireplace separates inner spaces while also warming the home. The back door down the hall leads to the bathroom.

This home is the perfect solution for those looking for a getaway that isn't across the globe and can be enjoyed at any time of year, and combining work and private life has never been easier because of it.
