This 123 square meter home in Kasugai, Japan, was designed by the talented architects H Studio. It's always a delight to have our screens graced by their impeccably designed projects and this one, today, is no exception!

The minimally designed home for the parents and their two children takes the form of two boxes, one which is skewed off center at an obtuse angle to the other. This arrangement not only creates an interesting street presence but an interesting interior spatial sequencing also.

From outside to inside, every moment, every junction, every detail is masterfully resolved. The attention to detail is faultless and the overall experience of inhabiting the space has been beautifully choreographed. Let's take a closer look…

Street presence

Set slightly back from the road, the home makes way for a garage out front. To the left of its concrete wall, steps lead up to the front entry. The homes exterior is simple and refined; the white, flat-roofed boxes exude a contemporary cool that has quickly become synonymous with minimalism.

The entry

The paved steps, leading up to the front door, are also skewed at the same angle as the two volumes. This simple gesture breaks with the ordinary to make one a little more aware of their movements in space; highlighting the moment of crossing from the exterior to the interior.

The entry hall

As we step inside, following the family dog through the spaces of the home, we immediately see that the interior opts for the minimal, all-white aesthetic we saw so boldly donned on the exterior.

That's not to say there's no hint of colour and personality. The white walls set a simple backdrop for the families artwork and an abundance of plants!

The living room

The open-plan social heart of the home comprises the living area, dining space, and kitchen. The furniture is, unsurprisingly, modern and monochromatic.

It's great to see the spaces activated by the inhabitants, rather than held stagnant in the idealised moment of conception. We are given a sense of what it would be like to occupy this home.

Double-height vs. single-height

Swinging around to face the other end of the space, we can see light flooding in through the high-level windows of the double height volume.

The variation in height, throughout this open-plan area, gives the space a fluidity, differentiating the various functions and atmospheres.

The kitchen

The kitchen is about as minimal as they come. The white cabinetry is perfectly rationalised and sleekly sophisticated; not a handle in sight and negative details galore. The island unit is propped slightly above the ground, appearing, almost, as if it is floating.

It really came at no surprise that the talented design team at H Architecture Studio delivered with yet another beautiful home. Before we say adieu to this minimalist beauty, you may like to take a look at another of their exquisite designs: A bright and open family home
