Nowadays, passive houses are becoming more and more popular throughout the world. A passive house is an interesting concept–they're homes that focus on energy efficiency and reducing their ecological footprint. They're mostly popular in German-speaking countries and Scandinavia, but the passive house we're showing you today is located in Olesa de Monstorrat, a city in Spain near Barcelona. This picturesque modern home was created and designed by House Habitat, and they have a very good reputation. They specialize in modern, functional, and sustainable family homes that save the environment and your wallet.

So if you're interested in modern design and futuristic housing developments, keep reading!

An expansive terrace

New passive house technology doesn't automatically a futuristic design style. The exterior of this house seems rather on the romantic side with its white-painted wood paneling. The terrace covered by the solid roof creates a protected outdoor area, which was also been designed with wooden materials–this time in ashy grey colour.

The terrace itself is truly expansive, stretching around the side of the home to the big area we see in front of us. It even leads us to a side entrance. The materials used for the home were selected by taking into account the climactic conditions of the region, the available resources, and the environmental impact of using those resources. All in all, these materials were chosen well.

A charming entryway

Here we have the entrance to the home and immediately we are charmed by the atmosphere. The area is flooded with light from the multiple large windows and it is then reflected and amplified by the white interior.

We have a beautiful contrast of colours with the white walls and the brown wicker chairs and steps. The mixture of wood and wicker in this space brings warmth to the cool backdrop, as well as a breezy sense of sophistication.

Spacious living room

The white colour scheme continues with confidence in the living room. From floor to ceiling, we have a neutralizing tone. The only thing to break the monotony are the colourful throws and pillows. But there's also a nice stark black and white contrast here with the wood stove.

But now for the practicality of the wood stove–this is one of the energy-efficient elements we were talking about. Wood stoves save you an average of £300 per year on your heating bill. That's because when you burn wood in the wood stove, the heat stays trapped at the basin and moves its way up the smoke pipe to heat anything from a small kitchen to this expansive living room.

A delightful kitchen

Now let's look at the kitchen. The first thing we notice is the white colour scheme again, but this time we have much more colour to add character. This kitchen is outfitted with everything that modern kitchens have in common from cooking island to delicate lighting.

The new and updated appliances ensure that this home uses the bare minimum with electricity, and the ceiling lights are even on dimmers. But what we love the most about this space is that this door to the left leads to the patio space we saw earlier. Think of all the possibilities for indoor and outdoor entertainment!

A snug bedroom

This bedroom here shows an even cosier side to the home. The beige coloured curtains and plaid quilted blanket make us feel like we're in grandma's cottage.

Normally in older homes, we try to avoid placing our beds near windows because of drafts, but this bed can be placed right near the window thanks to new window sealing technology and the way the house conserves and traps heat. No cold winter nights in this home, that's for sure!

Breaking patterns

The bathroom is the room that breaks the dominance of white. The dark gray tiled walls offer an exciting change for the eyes, while the white sink and cupboard ensure that the room isn't too dark.

The mirror expands the bathroom visually and reflects the sunlight coming in through the window. And of course, even this room is outfitted with energy-saving technology. A water-saving shower head was installed, as well as a low-flush toilet. This home is definitely leaving the smallest carbon footprint it can.
