Barcelona has always been a holy city for lovers of art, architecture and design. Its modern vista expanded under the inspiring presence of Antoni Gaudí. A number of buildings in Barcelona like Sagrada Família, Colonia Güell and Casa Mila still bear his name. But the city moved on with its artistic explorations for “the creation continues incessantly through the media of man.”

Its modern skyline is dominated by World Trade Centre, Forum Park and such buildings as Diagonal Zero Zero. The apartment that we will show you today is a fine example of industrial décor redefined for comfortable living in an urban setting. Join us as we begin our exploration of this sensually design loft space in present day Barcelona.

Overview

This loft space occupies the top floor of a 1916 building that performed as a distillery. The abandoned industrial building, located very close to the Barcelona coastline, has been reorganised for residential purposes.

It was designed by Barasona Diseño y Comunicacion, headed by Carmen Barasona. Established in 1995, Barasona Diseño y Comunicacion already made a name for themselves for their unusual approach to architecture and design.

A space to chill out

The 170 sq metres’ loft space with a formidable ceiling height of 6 metres exudes a certain Bohemian charm. The interior is transformable and is decorated “like a sea without obstacles.”

The colour scheme, dominated by deep blue, kohl black, subtle grey, white and silver also embraces the elements of azure blue ocean and the vast sky above. The canopy, designed by Carmen Barasona herself, is a reminiscent of a floating cloud.

This area is decorated with a daybed, makeshift TV cabinet made of an old trunk and a blue area rug. Twinkling lights on the wall painted by muralist Beatriz Colmenares is a reminder of a faraway constellation.

Children’s space

This part of the multifunctional loft is dedicated to children. It features a loft bed, study area also exhibiting a Verner Panton chair and a large study table on wheels.

Being a heterogeneous living space, this area can easily be transformed into a dining room or home office. A view of the simple kitchen with smart storage solutions can be obtained from here.

Dining room

It is the same area used as a children’s study at a different time of the day. Two smaller tables with wheels have been joined to create a dining table. The tables can be easily moved away after meals or be used for other purposes than dining.

A set of mismatching chairs pulled from different parts of the loft accompanies the dining table. The prominent use of grey and black is observable in this space too. However, wood flooring adds a charm that is enough to increase the conviviality of the interior.

Bedroom

The bedroom boasts a couple of daybeds and stools used as nightstands. Cloudy canopies cover both these areas. One part of it is dedicated to a small home office. Large framed illustrations have also been used to stylise this loft.

Bathroom

You can see a glimpse of Manhattan on the bathroom wall. Interestingly, Barcelona is sometimes considered as the Manhattan of Europe thanks to an illustrious legacy of its own.

A chic bathtub and other accessories decorate this space. Warm oak flooring increases the beauty of the bathroom.

Dressing room

The dressing room is located by the side of the bedroom. You get a measure of the massive windows that decorate this loft and keep its interior brightly illuminated all day long.

Except for simple shelves and drawers this space does not boast of any other accessories. The magic of minimalism pervades all areas of this industrial loft home.
