1. Direction of the pooja room

Big or small, it doesn’t matter. What matters and is really important is the direction of the pooja room. According to Vastu, the images and statues of the deities should be placed between the north and east direction of the house with deities facing towards the south or east. In this way while praying you will face towards the east, the direction of rising sun. Do your research and search for the perfect direction in your home. Getting the right direction for pooja space is significant. Once you are able to locate the perfect orientation, rest of the design for a perfectly pious and beautiful pooja space can be created according to the space available.

2. Locating the right location

There are a few rules and regulation set by the Vastu which should be followed while building a pooja room. The first and foremost is that the pooja room should not share its wall with the toilet or duct pipes. It’s basically to keep the unclean space away to maintain the sanctity of pooja space. The second rule is not to build a pooja space right opposite the main door or in the bedroom. The energies of the pooja space and prayer are believed to cause unrest here. Avoid it.

3. Maintain the sanctity of the space

We build a pooja space for a reason and are devotionally attached to it. Religion is something very personal. So why not keep it so? Avoid building a pooja space in the living room or busy passage. Even if it is small, but the presence of pooja space in living room demands and deserves a place of importance in the room. This at times can make you uncomfortable while entertaining your guests for the obvious reasons. Also pooja space should be away from the busy passage nestled in some quite corner to allow for a quiet and peaceful prayer time.

4. Daily ritual or occasional gathering

Size of the space becomes important depending upon praying habit of you and your family. If your family believes in praying together daily then it is sensible to have a big space to accommodate everyone comfortably. But if everyone follows their own time for daily ritual and gathers together for prayer only on special occasions or festivals, then you don’t a big space. You are the best person to judge how big or small your pooja space should be.

5. Height from above or below

The height at which the deities should be kept should again be decided based on your preference. Do you prefer to stand or sit while praying? But then you are not the only one praying in your home. Ecah members of the family will have their own preference. For the senior citizens it would be comfortable to sit and pray while for the young generation in rush, prayer just means bowing the head. Balance it off by placing the deities in such a height that it will comfortable to pray in either ways sitting or standing. The preferred height for it is 1 foot 6 inches from ground.

6. Size of the pooja space

Your devotion matters not the size. According to Kerala Vasthu, room sizes for mandir may differ but that should not be a concern and you can easily size your pooja space according to the availability of the space. It could a whole room or a niche of the wall; a pooja space can also be created in a corner. Be innovative and create a pooja space within a room. If space is constrained, make it so beautiful that it becomes a part of the décor. Just make sure that the platform where you keep the deities should preferably be of stone. It is easy to clean and the stone surface doesn’t get stained from oil.

7. Illuminating to shine

God, the source of all energy doesn’t need light. We light the pooja space to enhance the beauty of the space and create a serene ambience full of positive vibes for the evenings. Lights should be warm and soothing giving a depth to the space and creating a perfect environment for evening prayers and meditations. For pure divine experience, you can light the diyas.

8. Storage for a clean look

Sufficient and proper storage should be utmost priority while building a temple or while shopping for a readymade temple for your home. Storage will be required to store mat or cushion for sitting, cotton wick, incense sticks, matchbox, prayers books, kumkum, diyas, gangajal, camphor, utensils, etc. It is better to have drawers then open shelves for storage.

9. Aesthetic beauty

Look matters! After all it’s the abode of the God.Take inspirations from temple architecture or be innovative, get inspired from the images of Homify or from the pooja space of your friends; but make it appealing and attractive. You pray for a particular time, for the rest of the time the pooja space is there protecting your family and adding to the aesthetics of your home. Try to have a door so that you can close it and accentuate the garabhgriha (innermost sanctum) that we have in temples for some privacy of the God. Some more points to follow

While designing a perfect pooja room, the colours and the material you choose for construction also play a significant role. According to Vastu Shastra, white and yellow are the most auspicious colours for a pooja ghar as they attract positive energy and promote peacefulness. Similarly, when it comes to selecting the type of material, you can ask the professionals who you are consulting to use marble as it is easy to maintain and can last for years.

If you live in a house which has more than one floor, then you must build the mandir on the ground floor and in the centre of the house, as building the pooja room in the living room on the ground level results in a better flow of positive energy. However, you must remember that a mandir should never be kept in the basement of a multi-level house as it does not welcome natural light from any corner.
