French Twist in Hong Kong by Italian Design Team

French sophistication, Italian elegance and traditional Chinese style are a match made in design heaven. Just ask the talented Hong Kong-based team at Stefano Tordiglione Design. The Italian interior design company’s latest project is a charming residence that gracefully blends these elements. It was inspired by the French heritage of their client, local Chinese culture of Hong Kong (where the apartment is located) and their own Italian flair. With a fresh vision for East-meets-West aesthetics, Stefano Tordiglione Design, transformed what was a run-of-the-mill interior into a practical and beautiful living space.

Chinese objets d’art are dotted throughout the home, thus creating a bond with the local environment. Antiques juxtaposed with modern design create a pastiche of old and new as well as East and West. In the dining area, a round marble table is paired with retro European style white resin chairs. Providing the perfect backdrop to this, and a splash of colour, is a light jade feature wall where a canvas of a girl in red ribbon by an up-and-coming Chinese artist Fang Hui is found.

The original apartment layout was redesigned to create more space and light. An entire bedroom of the three-bedroom plan was removed to enlarge the living area. Stefano Tordiglione Design also opened up the kitchen by taking out its partitioning walls, to increase the size and integrate it with the living room. Hence both sections now enjoy a spacious and communal feel. They further brightened the home up by replacing all the windows with bigger ones. Light wooden flooring was added to create a natural charm and complement the overall décor. Two black drawings of lady faces by the renowned Vietnamese artist Luu Cong Nhan are also featured to bring life and sensuality to the surroundings.

In contrast to the living areas, the master bedroom has a serene and more minimalist look. Stefano Tordiglione Design took out one of the two guest bathrooms to clear way for a walk-in-closet and expand the room’s square footage. The accent wall on the right features an Asian bird wallpaper motif on one side, and a plain pale mauve hue on the left, on which a painting of two dancing characters from the Chinese artist Liu Kun is in display. These add a feminine touch (at the request of their female client) without being too busy. The bedroom door was painted a playful pastel green hue and finished with an ornamental traditional Chinese door handle.

Another feature of the apartment not to be missed is the quaint terrace. It is framed by an earthy bamboo wall and decorated with ethnic stone statues and giant ceramic pots. Close attention to detail is evident throughout the home: from the space planning to fulfill the functional request of the client to the shades of colour that have been selected for each room. Stefano Tordiglione Design are gaining renown in Asia for breaking down the walls, not only literally, but culturally through their distinctly East-meets-West approach to high quality design.
