Fine Art

Finds The Ideal Home

Contemporary art and Chinese antique pieces are equally at home in this sleek and cosy apartment in Mid-Levels, the most recent residential apartment by Stefano Tordiglione Design. Created especially for its owner – an Italian art lover in Hong Kong – the rare space lets its art shine without it taking centre stage, effortlessly bringing art and design together as well as elements of East and West.

From a 1,000 square foot, three bedroom
ground floor apartment, the design team converted the space into a luxurious one bedroom/studio apartment, surrounded on both sides by outdoor space which lends it the feeling of a villa. Large windows look out onto the two leafy patios, while inside, after all the interior walls were torn down, a sole bedroom is now separated from the large living area by stylish sliding wooden panels with Oriental motifs that echo the flat's Hong Kong location. Antique Chinese lions welcome visitors into the apartment and the flooring is all original, but has been taken up, polished and repositioned with cement in a more contemporary pattern. Outside an old Chinese path was re-created on site with recycled tiles, each piece laid by hand, ensuring old materials are anew with life again. As a result, the entrance take visitors through the small city garden and into the stylish home.

The flat's new layout embraces European living standards, from the open entrance way to the spacious bathroom and expansive living area which, alongside the kitchen, becomes the heart of the apartment. This is a place for family and friends to gather together and enjoy not only each other's company but also the space and its punctuation with big names of the art world – A Keith Haring sits above the bed, a video installation by Tony Oursler stands by the sofa etc.

Design also makes its mark, both traditional and contemporary elements blend in harmony. A modern dark metal bookcase by Stefano Tordiglione Design appears near the entrance. The kitchen is decked out in a classic yet sleek marble. The bathroom has been done out in cement and also features an amazing marble shower. A simple slice of wood with copper top is inlaid into the window space in the bedroom that effectively becomes a desk, while the windows throughout the apartment recreate the traditional with old iron frames inlaid with custom-made bevelled glass. The whole apartment shows an understated elegance while keeping a plesant and cosy feeling of the living space.

The result is a place of beautiful things, sleek design and the warmth and comfort of a true home.
