How do you re-build a house when the only way to get there is down a steep, winding coastal footpath over a pedestrian railway crossing?

On this site there is no access for machinery and the individual pieces had to be small and light enough to be carried down the coast path by hand. In designing and building the new house we therefore adopted a few simple aims: Use unprocessed or ‘hardly’ processed inert, natural materials. These have the least environmental impact in manufacture, are likely to be found locally or even on the site, and are easiest to dispose of or re-use at the end of the building’s life. Use timber and it’s derivatives. This locks-up carbon for the life of the building, and it can be re-used or burnt for fuel at the end. For the remainder, choose high value materials that can be easily separated/ de-constructed and will be recycled at the end of the building’s life. For example choose metal instead of plastic where you can. The building has an A-rated EPC, is as air tight as a Passivhaus, of passive solar design, naturally daylit, low water use, healthy to build and live in, equipped with renewable energy generation.
