House in Chandlers Ford: Two storey Extension. Our Clients home is sited in a “Character Area” of Chandlers Ford on a quiet, residential, tree lined road. The majority of dwellings are 1950's brick buildings, with wide two storey frontages and ample rear gardens. Over the years some of the buildings have been adapted, with rear extensions in a matching style, however there has been little intervention to the character of the street scape. The brief was to gain as much space as possible to the upper level whilst preserving the integrity of the garden. Two additional bedrooms were requested upstairs and a more modern, open plan space to the ground floor level, to incorporate the kitchen, sitting room, dining room and child friendly playing spaces. A modern approach to the build was desired, avoiding the usual mimicking of the original building. Our Client has a background in rain screen cladding, and was keen to bring his expertise into the build. We designed a three-metre, extension to the rear of the property, aligning with the existing single storey extension, creating a much more symmetrical plan, with rendered masonry work giving a more modern feel to the existing rear. A continuous 8.5m, powder coated Aluminium, folding sliding door set provides vast views to the well established garden from any part of the ground floor level, a true feeling of “bringing the outside in”. An external shower allows muddy wellies to be washed off on a rainy day or a way to cool down in the hot summer sun. A large sky-light set above the dining table gives glimpses of the silvering cedar cladding above, whilst flooding in natural daylight. At first floor level, the external material changes to cedar, echoing the red bricks of the main house. This cladding is set out in a stacked pattern and wraps around the underside of the cantilevered soffit, projecting a metre beyond the ground floor footprint. With incorporated lighting this projection illuminates the slate below and provides shelter from rain. The vertical lines of the stacked paneling run around the building, aligning with the powder coated aluminium windows, inset into powder-coated cassettes, to form exaggerated frames. This extension is a modern interpretation of the existing house. From the main road this home may look like any other but when inside a modern life is celebrated. With no compartmentalization, a feeling of free flow from house to garden is embraced.
